A 60-day cruise around the Australian Coast was terminated following the fatal incident of an older female passenger who was stranded by the ship on a remote tropical isle.

The elderly woman had been hiking on Lizard Island with shipmates from the cruise ship, but parted ways from the group for a break. The ship departed without her and went back later that day after the crew became aware the lady was unaccounted for.

A large-scale hunt found her remains the following day.

Officials are looking into the incident, alongside law enforcement and the official investigator.

The CEO of the cruise operator said that passengers and personnel on the Coral Adventurer were informed that the rest of the journey had been called off due to the "tragic passing and prior technical problems".

In a statement, he mentioned that passengers would be issued a full refund, and said the company was working "to arrange the homeward trips of the individuals via specially arranged planes".

Regulatory bodies also released an updated statement, and said they had "delivered a notice to the Master" preventing any further travelers from getting on the ship.

The official said that they would inspect the ship in the port city upon its coming back.

Chronology of Incidents

The ship first departed Cairns on the 24th of October, and was only 48 hours into the voyage at the moment of the senior passenger's death. The remote island was the first stop on the voyage.

Travelers on the vessel - who typically pay tens of thousands of currency to participate in the expedition - were transported there for a daily excursion with the option of trekking or snorkeling.

Relatives Statement

The child of the deceased woman said that her loved ones was "stunned and distressed that the ship left Lizard Island after an scheduled outing without my mum".

Via her announcement, she described her mother as an "active octogenarian" who was a member of a hiking club.

"Based on limited facts we have been provided, it appears that there was a failure of attention and ordinary reasoning," she said.

She added that she wished the investigation would be able to pinpoint what "the organization should have done that might have protected Mum's existence".

"We understand from the investigators that it was a exceptionally warm day, and she took sick on the mountain ascent," she explained.

"She was asked her to go back, without accompaniment. Then the vessel left, seemingly without doing a roll call.

"At some stage in that process, or not long after, mother succumbed, alone."

Organization Response

In a statement, the CEO affirmed that the organization was "collaborating extensively with investigators to aid their examination".

He said that the organization was "very regretful that this has transpired" and had provided its total backing to the loved ones.

Cruise Industry Practices

The vessel serves up to a hundred twenty passengers with 46 crew, according to company details. It was purpose-built to enter isolated areas of the Australian coast and is outfitted with "auxiliary vessels" - minor craft used to transport individuals on day excursions.

Events such as this are infrequent, and passenger vessels have systems to document which individuals are getting on or disembarking, according to maritime specialists.

"Leaving covertly or [back] aboard simply isn't an possibility," an authority stated.

Shipping companies consider these processes with great importance and have "sophisticated systems in place to stop such incidents from happening," the authority added.

"This seems to be most likely a shocking - and tragic - isolated incident."
