Micky van de Ven found the net twice as Spurs extended their unbeaten run on the road in the Premier League and delivered Everton their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their last five matches at their new ground at the dockside location, having left their historic home behind after more than a century at the end of last season.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven pounced on two occasions from corners in the first half to place their impressive record at risk, and they were unable to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - headed home a final goal to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien thought he had levelled the tally a short while after the defender's opener, glancing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

Beto, meanwhile, missed a number of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of fine saves to guarantee the London club went five matches on the road unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the VAR intervened, instructing the match official to check the goal on the screen and the official decided that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

This victory moves the manager's team into third place in the division, a handful of points off local foes and table-toppers Arsenal.

Everton stay 14th and sit half a dozen points clear of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender excels in role at both ends of the field

Following a drab midweek display in the Champions League against the French side, where they mustered a only two shots on goal, the manager opted for Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The summer signing was unable to influence the game before being replaced for the substitute after an hour on the field, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the end.

Defender Van de Ven transformed into an offensive threat to be feared.

Tottenham's first goal came from a well-worked set-piece play, with the midfielder directing the ball back across the six-yard box for an free Van de Ven to head home.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as captain in the Argentine's absence - notched his next goal in added time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to nod in.

Van de Ven was just as outstanding in defence, combining effectively with his defensive colleague as the pair handled superbly with the 34 crosses thrown their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Toffees lacking finishing touch

The club's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the novelty may have faded somewhat and supporters flocked to the gates after the midfielder's final goal for Spurs.

The break in Everton's unbeaten home run will not be a massive worry for David Moyes, but their striker situation will be.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Everton's two established centre-forwards - had netted only a single goal between them before Sunday's match.

And they were failed to contribute to that poor tally on a damp and dreary evening on in Liverpool.

The striker's form was epitomized when he chose to overhead kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, even with having room and time to readjust for a more conventional shot that would have challenged Vicario.

Barry, as well, was unable to influence the game after replacing the starter in the 65th minute.

It was not for a shortage of chance. Most of Everton's offensive moves came through the winger and the forward, who tirelessly delivered dangerous balls into the Tottenham box.

Everton: The team head to the Stadium of Light in the top flight on early November at 8 PM.

Spurs: The London club travel to Newcastle's ground on Wednesday, 29 October for their next round League Cup tie against Newcastle.
