Qatar Sprint Race and Grand Prix Qualifying: Real-Time Updates

Introduction

Our correspondent is about to begin to take you through this day's sprint race (14:00 GMT) and grid-setting session (6pm).

Current Events

Formation Lap Period

The warm-up lap has begun.

Track Information

There are nineteen laps of the longest circuit in F1, David Croft informs us.

Countdown

The last moments is underway.

Racer Positions

An advantage in Max Verstappen's favour: his fellow driver Tsunoda is in front of him by a single position. He is unlikely to mess with Red Bull's main man.

Media Conversations

Sky interviewing Sky now: the analyst is with Mercedes.

Karun Chandhok is looking forward to 2026, speaking with Adrian Newey about his stepping up to Aston Martin lead role.

Grid Details

There are only sixteen vehicles on the grid. This followed another poor grid-setting session for Lewis Hamilton: after coming twentieth and final in Las Vegas, resulting in an eighth position in the grand prix, he failed to make it out of Q1 once more on the previous day. The team have as a result made changes to his setup and so he begins from the starting area.

Aston Martin's Lance Stroll and the Alpine pair of Gasly and Franco Colapinto are all doing likewise.

Driver Comments

"We take the learning for the next day," states Isack Hadjar, starting eleventh. There will be plenty of learning.

Constructors' Championship

It's not all about the drivers' title: The team have run away with the constructors' gong but Mercedes, with a forty-point advantage over Red Bull, will be hoping to secure the runner-up position this weekend. George Russell can assist in this goal from the front row, and Antonelli will begin immediately after Verstappen.

Previous Results

Oscar Piastri won that day – as he did the previous season, too. McLaren's Australian is going for a third consecutive win.

Sprint Race Value

Alright, approximately twenty minutes to go till the short race begins. Barring disaster, its main importance is as an indication of future events, rather than significant in its itself, with only eight points available to the victor. Mind you, second place in this race was enough for the driver to claim the title in a prior season.

Max Verstappen wins the championship following his teammate's accident of Qatar GP sprint race.
